They had to repay all the money that they had borrowed to buy the new necklace. They also sent away their maid. Mr. Loisel took on extra evening and night work copying documents, while Matilda spent ten years doing heavy domestic chores like scrubbing floors.

Ans. Matilda is the young and beautiful wife of Mr. Loisel. He is a clerk in the board of Education. Matilda is proud of her beauty. She thinks she is a victim of social injustice. She is unhappy with her husband‟s small income,  house and old furniture.

Her husband does his best to make her happy. He puts up with her foolish demands. The loss of the necklace proves a turning point in their life.  After the loss she becomes mature, humble and grateful. She sacrifices every pleasure to get out of this problem. Though this brutal ten-year struggle ruins her physical beauty and ages her prematurely, it makes her a careful and responsible woman.
