Q. 1 Give a brief summary of Kamala Das’s POEM ‘My Mother at Sixty-Six’.

 Ans. It was Friday morning. The poetess was going to the Cochin airport. Her sixty-six years old mother was sitting beside her. The poetess’ mother looked as pale as dead body. A sad thought came into the poetess mind. But she soon drove this thought away and started looked at the trees that seemed to be running fast. She saw children coming out of their homes in joy. After reaching the airport, the poetess went through the security check, standing a few yards away. She again looked at her mother. The mother looked pale and weak. But the poetess said nothing but this “Amma, see you soon.” Then she smiled and smiled and smiled. That was all she did.

Ans. The POEM ‘An Elementary School Classroom in a Slum’ is written by Stephen Spender. Its theme is social injustice and class inequality. There are two worlds. These worlds are completely different from each other. On the one hand, there is the world of the rich and powerful people. It is the world of art, culture and literature. It has no meaning for slum children. The slum children live in dark, narrow streets. Their future is dark. Thus there is a wide gap between these two worlds. There can be no real progress if this gap is not removed. This is the message the poet gives through this POEM. The poet thinks that these poor children must be taken out of their dirty areas.


3. Keeping Quiet (Pablo Neruda)

 Q. 1 Discuss the theme or the substance of the poem ‘Keeping Quiet’ critically.

Ans. This is an anti-war poem. The poet suggests that all people should suspend their activities for some time and keep quiet. He brings out the importance of keeping quiet. He wants to stop wars of all kinds at once. He asks us not move even our arms. The poet tells us that man’s actions have already created trouble in the world. Now it is time to do self-introspection. Quiet introspection is the solution to the social, political and religious problems. A long silence can soothe our feelings. It will help to create a mutual feeling and understanding among human beings.

 

Q. 2 What idea does Pablo Neruda want to convey in his poem, ‘Keeping Quiet’?

Ans. The poet wants to convey us the importance of stillness. Man is always in a hurry. He remains busy in worldly activities. But he has no time for self introspection. So the poet wants us to stop all our worldly activities for a few moments. We should do some quite introspection. It will soothe our feelings. It will also help us to understand ourselves. Then and only then we can restart our activities in a better and purposeful manner.

Ans. ‘A Thing of Beauty’ is a beautiful POEM by John Keats. The poet says that nature is a storehouse of beauty. There are many beautiful things in nature such as – the sun, the moon, the trees, the daffodils, the clear rills and the musk – roses. The poet says that the loveliness of the beautiful things never comes to an end. Rather it increases day by day. It gives comfort to our soul and mind like a sweet bower of flowers. It also gives us good health.  A thing of beauty removes all kinds of sadness from our mind. It gives us joy that brightens our soul. The poet says that there are so many things in this world, which make us sad. These are deaths, dismays, troubles, sufferings, hatred etc. But a thing of beauty removes all of them from our heart and soul. The tales of heroes are an immortal fountain of endless joy. Really a thing of beauty is a joy forever.


5. A Roadside Stand (Robert Frost)

1. Write in brief the theme/central idea of the poem 'A Roadside Stand'.

Ans. In this poem, Robert Frost comments on rich people who don’t show any sympathy towards poor people. The poet tells that poor villager setup a stand near the road to sells the things to earn some money.  People passed from there but they don’t buy any things. They only complained for artless painting. Some cars came there only to ask the things not to buy anything.  


6. Aunt Jennifer’s Tigers (Adrienne Rich)

1. Write brief summary of the poem ‘Aunt Jennifer’s Tigers.

Ans. In the poem a woman expresses her deep feeling through her art. She (Aunt Jennifer) is prey of male dominant society. There is no one with whom she can share her physical pain. So she makes a picture to describe her deep feelings. She created the tigers on a panel. The tigers are free and fearless. On the other hand, Aunt Jennifer’s is in the grip of ordeals which have crushed her life.
