During that whole period, he never forgot that the man was enemy. He even thought of handling him over the police but couldn’t do so. He was certain that they would kill him. He was in a fix what to do. He adopted the course that could be the best under such circumstances. He helped the man to escape in a boat. Thus he got rid of the enemy without having him killed.

        Ans.  Anne Frank felt lonely in the world. She had loving parents, an elder sister and a number of friends. But she was not intimate with anyone. She could to talk to them about common everyday matters. But she could not express her inner feelings to them. She wanted a patient listener. But she found that people had no patience to listen to her. She wanted to share her ideas. So she decided to maintain a diary. A diary is not a human being. It has a lot more patience than man. One can express one’s thoughts freely. The diary does not get bored. It is a true friend. It never rejects the offer of friendship. That is why Anne Frank says that paper has more patience than people.

2. Give a brief character sketch of Wanda Petronski.

Ans. Wanda Petronski is a Polish girl who has shifted to America from Poland with her parents.Wanda is a name difficult to pronounce. She belongs to a very poor family and lives in the poor area of town with her brother and father upon Boggins Heights. She is very shy and quiet. She does not talk to anyone and hardly speaks anything in class. She doesn't laugh in the class. She has no friends and sits in the last row of the class with some naughty boys so that nobody notices her. She wears the same faded blue dress every day which is not ironed but clean.

Everybody teases her in class for her dress and shoes every day. In anger, she claims of having a hundred dresses and sixty pairs of shoes at home. She is very determined and shows her determination in the drawing competition by making a hundred sketches of dresses she claims to own. Each of them is so beautiful, that she wins the competition. 

3. Give a brief character sketch of Mrs. Matilda Loisel.

Ans. Matilda is the young and beautiful wife of Mr. Loisel, a clerk in the board of Education. She is proud of her beauty. She thinks she is a victim of social injustice and irony of fate. She is unhappy with her husband‟s small income, house and old furniture.

     Her husband does his best to make her as happy as he can afford. He puts up with her foolish demands. The loss of the necklace proves a turning point in the development of her character.  After the loss she becomes a mature, humble and grateful wife who can gladly sacrifice every pleasure to get her husband out of his financial misery. Ø                   1. How did Abdul Kalam earn his first wages? How did he feel at that time? Explain.

                Ans. The train would not stop at Rameshwaram and the bundles of newspapers were thrown from the running train. His cousin Samsuddin who distributed newspapers wanted a helping hand to catch these bundles. Abdul was employed by his cousin to collect them. This way he earned his first wages. He felt very proud on earning his first wage.

          2. How does the guru manage to save his disciple’s life?

            Ans. The king ordered to execute the disciple. He prayed to his Guru to save him. The Guru heard his prayer in his vision and appeared to rescue his disciple. He told the king that it was not an ordinary stake. Whoever went first would become the king in the next life. The second person to go would become his minister. But the king wanted to take advantage of this opportunity so he let them go. Then, when they were released, it turned out that the guru had managed to save his disciple’s life.

    3. Theme of 'A Legend of Northland'

        Ans. A Legend of the Northland gives us a moral lesson. The poem talks about a little woman who was punished by saint Peter. The lady refused to give him a cake that she had baked. The behaviour of the woman provokes Saint Peter who curses her and changes her into a woodpecker. Saint Peter teaches a lesson to all humans that we must not be selfish.

   4. Describe how Prashant reached his village after the cyclone. How he helped himself and other at the time of flood? 

         Ans. Prashant took a long stick and started his 18 kms journey to his village. He used the stick to know the level of the water and locate the road through the flood waters. At several places, he had to swim when he lost the road. In every village he passed, he could hardly see a house standing. Prashant was at his friend's house when the storm struck Orissa. Prashant had to spend two nights on the open rooftop in the rain due to the flood. He survived by eating the coconuts from a tree that had fallen on the roof.
