Ans. Writing in a diary is a strange experience for Anne because she has never writing anything before. Secondly, she thinks that no one will be interested in the thoughts of a thirteen year old girl, except herself. So it was better to record those thoughts in her diary.

2. How do you know that Anne was close to her grandmother?

Ans. Anne lived with her grandmother for sometime while her parents settled down in Holland. She was very close to her Grandmother. Anne herself reveals that she loved her grandmother a lot and she used to think about her often. In 1942, on her birthday, she lit one candle for her.

Ans. Wanda Petronski was a Polish girl. She lived in Boggins Heights, which was the poor part of town.

1. ‘Paper has more patience than people’. Elucidate.

        Ans.  Anne Frank felt lonely in the world. She had loving parents, an elder sister and a number of friends. But she was not intimate with anyone. She could to talk to them about common everyday matters. But she could not express her inner feelings to them. She wanted a patient listener. But she found that people had no patience to listen to her. She wanted to share her ideas. So she decided to maintain a diary. A diary is not a human being. It has a lot more patience than man. One can express one’s thoughts freely. The diary does not get bored. It is a true friend. It never rejects the offer of friendship. That is why Anne Frank says that paper has more patience than people.

2. Give a brief character sketch of Wanda Petronski.

Ans. Wanda Petronski is a Polish girl who has shifted to America from Poland with her parents.Wanda is a name difficult to pronounce. She belongs to a very poor family and lives in the poor area of town with her brother and father upon Boggins Heights. She is very shy and quiet. She does not talk to anyone and hardly speaks anything in class. She doesn't laugh in the class. She has no friends and sits in the last row of the class with some naughty boys so that nobody notices her. She wears the same faded blue dress every day which is not ironed but clean.

Everybody teases her in class for her dress and shoes every day. In anger, she claims of having a hundred dresses and sixty pairs of shoes at home. She is very determined and shows her determination in the drawing competition by making a hundred sketches of dresses she claims to own. Each of them is so beautiful, that she wins the competition. 

3. Give a brief character sketch of Mrs. Matilda Loisel.

Ans. Matilda is the young and beautiful wife of Mr. Loisel, a clerk in the board of Education. She is proud of her beauty. She thinks she is a victim of social injustice and irony of fate. She is unhappy with her husband‟s small income, house and old furniture.

     Her husband does his best to make her as happy as he can afford. He puts up with her foolish demands. The loss of the necklace proves a turning point in the development of her character.  After the loss she becomes a mature, humble and grateful wife who can gladly sacrifice every pleasure to get her husband out of his financial misery. It makes her a careful and responsible woman.
