1.  The Lost Child (Mulk Raj Anand)

 

1. What are the things the child sees on his way to the fair? Why does he lag behind?

Ans. On his way to the fair the child sees toys, balloons of different colours, garland of gulmohur, a swing and a snake-charmer playing a flute. He gets attracted towards all these things. So, he lags behind.

 

2. Where was the little boy going to with his parents? What did he want there ?

Ans. The child went to a fair with his parents. He wanted garlands, balloons and sweets over there. He also wanted to see the snake and take a ride on the swing.

 

3. Why does the lost child lose interest in the things that he had wanted earlier?

Ans. The lost child loses interest in the things he had wanted earlier because he got lost in the fair. He is panic-stricken for being lost. Now he first wants his parents. He is afraid and feels unsafe.

 

4. Who rescued the lost child ? What did he offer to buy him?

Ans. The man in the shrine rescued the lost child. He lifted him up in his arms and tried to soothe him. He took him to the nearest roundabout swing and offered to buy him flowers, balloons and sheets. 

 

 

2. The Adventures of Toto (Ruskin Bond)

 

1. How does Toto come to grandfather’s private zoo?

Ans. Grandfather bought Toto from a tonga-driver for five rupees. The tonga-driver kept the monkey tied to a feeding-trough. It looked so out of place there that grandfather decided he would add it to his private zoo.

 

2. ‘Toto was a pretty monkey.’ In what sense is Toto pretty?

Ans. Toto was a pretty monkey with bright eyes sparkling with mischief, pearly white teeth, quick and wicked fingers and a gracious tail which served as a third hand. His cute smile used to frighten elderly Anglo- Indian ladies.

 

3. How does Toto take a bath? Where does he learn to do this?

Ans. Toto takes bathe in a tub' of warm water. It puts its legs in the water one by one and applies soap as well. As monkeys are good at aping others, so Toto has learnt proper steps of bathing while watching the narrator doing the same.

 

4. Why was Toto sold back to the tonga-driver?

Ans. Grandfather sold Toto back to the tonga-driver. This was because Toto was a very naughty and mischievous monkey and troubled the entire family a lot. He caused a great deal of loss in dishes, clothes, curtains, wallpaper and other household items.

 

5. Why was Toto’s presence kept a secret from the writer’s grandmother?

Ans. Toto's presence was kept a secret as the narrator's grandmother did not like pets and she would've not accepted Toto as a pet in the house. Therefore,Toto was kept in a closet and was tied to a peg fastened to a wall.

1. What are the two strange things the guru and his disciple find the kingdom of fools?

    Ans. The two strange things that the guru and his disciple find in the kingdom of fools are: People used to work during nights and sleep during days. Cost of everything in the market was the same, one duddu.

 

2. Why does the disciple decide to stay in the kingdom of fools?

Ans. The disciple decided to stay in the Kingdom of Fools because the cost of everything was single duddu. And all that he wanted was good and very cheap.

 

3. Who was finally blamed for the crime and why?

Ans. The rich owner of the house was finally blamed for the crime. He said that his father had ordered the jewellery and he should have been responsible. But because his father had died, the king gave judgment that he would die in his father's place.
