Note-making

What is Note-making?

Note making-1

In the winter season as well as in the summer season a variety of fruit and vegetables come in the market. If we ask the young guys "where do they come from? The answer is 'from the market, from the vegetable market or from the fields'. They must know that plants give us all vegetables. Some trees give us fruits for years and years. Once they are mature, they start giving us some edible part in the form of stem, leaves, flowers or fruits and in many cases roots also. We, the human beings start eating them from the very start a seed sprouts. Some grains are eaten in sprouted form such as grams, pulses and beans. Some roots are eaten as a part of food such as carrot, radish, beatroot, turnip, sweet potato etc. Stems of some plants are eaten as food such as onion, potato, ginger, garlic, turmeric (all underground modified ones). Some leaves of plants are eaten as leafy vegetables such as spinach, cabbage, mustard etc. Some flowers are used for food products such as sunflower, jasmine, etc. Fruits such as apple, orange, mango, banana etc. are obtained from trees. Even some of the seeds are caten such as almonds, walnuts, cashew nuts, etc. So there is no part which we leave and do note at it.

Note making-2

Paper wastage is a direct loss to the trees. If we keep on wasting papers at the same pace, we shall need more and more trees. Use of paper is related to almost all the fields of our day to day working. We need a print out for every type of receipt. We need print outs for our notes. We need printout for any type of billing. We demand to write everything on paper. Usually, it is seen that all such and other print outs are taken on one side of the page. Even the Ph.D. thesis is printed one sided. Most of the decisions in the court are written one sided. So, in all the above cases and other's if both the sides of a paper are used there will be a saving of 50% paper. Not only this, paper once used for one document which are to be put in record; can be used for another one from the other side means one side can be used for one type of assignment and other side for another. Print outs which are needed for once only can be reused with other blank side for some rough work or correction work. Therefore, we must Save Trees, Save Paper, Save Earth.

Questions:

(a) On the basis of your reading of the passage, make notes on it using headings and sub-headings. Use recognisable abbreviations wherever necessary.

(b) Also assign a suitable title to it.

Section A (Reading)

1. Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow by choosing correct options given. 5

The choices we make on a daily basis-wearing a seatbelt, lifting heavy objects correctly or purposely staying out of any dangerous situation-can either ensure our safety or bring about potentially harmful circumstances. You and I need to make a decision that we are going to get our lives in order. Exercising self-control, self-discipline and establishing boundaries and borders in our lives are some of the most important things we can do. A life without discipline is one that's filled with carelessness.

We can think it's kind of exciting to live life on the edge. We like the image of "Yeah! That's me! Living on the edge! Woo-boo!" It's become a popular way to look at life. But if you see, even highways have lines, which provide margins for our safety while we're driving. If we go over one side, we'll go into the ditch. If we cross over the line in the middle, we could get killed. And we like those lines because they help to keep us safe. Sometimes we don't even realize how lines help to keep us safe.

I'm not proud of this, but for the first 20 years of my life at work, I ignored my limits. I felt horrible, physically, most of the time. I used to tell myself, "I know I have limits and that I've reached them, but I'm going to ignore them and see if or how long I can get by with it." I ran to doctors, trying to make myself feel better through pills, vitamins, natural stuff and anything I could get my hands on. Some of the doctors would tell me, "It's just stress." That just made me mad. I thought stress meant you don't like what you do or can't handle life, and I love what I do. But I kept pushing myself, travelling, doing speaking engagements and so on- simply exhausting myself.

Finally, I understood I was living an unsustainable life and needed to make some changes in my outlook and lifestyle. You and I don't have to be like everyone else or keep up with anyone else Each of us needs to be exactly the way we are, and we don't have to apologize for it. We're not all alike, and we need to find a comfort zone in which we can enjoy our lives instead of making ourselves sick with an overload of stress and pressure

a. The reason why living on the edge has become popular is because of the

(i) constant need for something different      (ii) exhausting effort to make changes

(iii) population being much younger                (iv) strong tendency to stay within our limits

b. The phrase "potentially harmful circumstances" refers to circumstances that can

(i) certainly, be dangerous                                (ii) be fairly dangerous

(iii) be possibly dangerous                             (iv) seldom be dangerous

c. The author explains the importance of discipline and boundaries in our lives using the example of

Ans. lines on the highway

d. What is the message conveyed in the last paragraph of the passage?

Ans. be the best version of yourself

e. Which of the following will be the most appropriate title for the passage?

(i) Much too soon                                            (ii) Enough is enough

(iii) How much is too much?                         (iv) Have enough to do?

Of course, not everything about rain is glamorous. Especially when you think about endless traffic jams, the bad roads dotted with potholes, uncleared garbage and the spate of waterborne diseases. Also, viral infections like colds and coughs make their presence felt. Most infectious diseases prevalent in the rainy season can be prevented by simply washing our hands regularly. Scrubbing hands regularly with water and soap can prevent us from contracting respiratory and diarrheal diseases. Kids have a lower level of immunity, and hence hand washing becomes a crucial part of their lifestyle. When playing, especially during monsoon season, kids come into contact with germs and can unknowingly become infected simply by touching their nose, eyes or mouth. The Food and Drug Administration states that the human influenza virus can survive on surfaces for up to eight hours, making people susceptible to catching it each time they touch the infected surface. Hence repeated hand washing is required. To make the best of the rainy season, we should follow some simple guidelines. First of all, if we decide to get wet in the tan we should change into a dry set of clothes at the earliest. Also, we should keep raw food items at bay and wash vegetables and fruits thoroughly before use. Moreover, strict kitchen hygiene should be maintained in order to enjoy one of the most beautiful seasons of the year. Also, in order to have a trouble- free rainy season, home-made fresh food should be given preference over the fast food sold in the market.

2. Read the following passage carefully and make notes on it and also supply a suitable title. 5

Effective speaking depends on effective listening. It takes energy to concentrate on hearing and to concentrate on understanding what has been heard. Incompetent listeners fail in a number of ways. First, they may drift. Their attention drifts from what the speaker is saying. Second, they may counter. They find counter-arguments to whatever a speaker may be saying. Third, they compete. Then, they filter. They exclude from their understanding those parts of the message which do not readily fit with their own frame of reference. Finally, they react. They let personal feelings about a speaker or subject override the significance of the message which is being sent. What can a listener do to be more effective? The first key to effective listening is the art of concentration. If a listener positively wishes to concentrate on receiving a message his chances of success are high. It may need determination. Some speakers are difficult to follow, either because of voice problems or because of the form in which they send a message. There is then a particular need for the determination of a listener to concentrate on what is being said. Concentration is helped by alertness. Mental alertness is helped by physical alertness. It is not simply physical fitness, but also positioning of the body, the limbs and the head. Some people also find it helpful to their concentration if they hold the head slightly to one side. One useful way for achieving this is intensive note-taking, by trying to capture the critical headings and sub-headings the speaker is referring to.

Note-taking has been recommended as an aid to the listener. It also helps the speaker. It gives him confidence when he sees that listeners are sufficiently interested to take notes; the patterns of eye- contact when the note-taker looks up can be very positive; and the speaker's timing is aided-he can see when a note-taker is writing hard and can then make effective use of pauses.

Posture too is important. Consider the impact made by a less competent listener who pushes his chair backwards and slouches. An upright posture helps a listener's concentration. At the same time, it is seen by the speaker to be a positive feature amongst his listeners. Effective listening skills have an impact on both the listener and the speaker.

Dear Sir,

Subject: Rising incidences of reckless and rash driving.

Through the column of your esteemed newspaper, I would like to draw the attention of the concerned authorities towards the rising reckless and rash driving in the city. These days, it has become difficult to walk on road without fear. Drivers, especially younger do not follow the traffic rules and do not care for the safety of others.  It is no surprise that the cases of road accidents are rising day by day. Thank you

Sincerely,
