1. Cardamom, known as the queen of all spices, boasts a history as ancient as the human race itself. It is the dried fruit of a herbaceous perennial plant. A warm, humid climate, loamy soil rich in organic matter, distributed rainfall, and specialized cultivation and processing methods all combine to render Indian cardamom truly unique in aroma, flavor, size, and its distinct parrot green color
Two types of cardamom are produced in India. The first type, the larger variety, holds less significance as it is not traded in the futures market)lt is cultivated in the north-eastern regions of the country. The second type, produced in the southern states, is actively traded in the futures market. This variety is primarily cultivated in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka. As per the futures market rules, only the 7 mm quality was initially traded in exchanges. However, the norms were relaxed, and now the 6 mm quality is also traded.
3. Cardamom is an expensive spice, second only to saffron. Indian cardamom is known in two main varieties: Malabar and Mysore. The Mysore variety, containing high levels of eineol and limonene, is more aromatic. India has emerged as the world's largest producer and exporter of cardamom.
4. The main harvest season for cardamom in India spans from August to February. Cardamom reaches the yielding stage two years after plantation. The primary physical markets for cardamom include Kumily, Vandiperiyar, Thekkady, Puliyarmala in Kerala, and Bodinayakanur and Cumbum in Tamil Nadu.
5. Kerala is the principal producer of cardamom, contributing up to 60% of the total production. Karnataka accounts for around 25% of the production. In Tamil Nadu, Ooty is the major producer, contributing approximately 10-15% of the total output. Besides India, Guatemala also produces around 1,000-2,000 tons of cardamom annually. However, due to its lower quality, Guatemalan cardamom is available at cheaper rates.

Dear Sir
I wish to draw your attention to the bad sanitary conditions in our locality. The roads of the colony are in poor condition. There are pot holes on the roads. In rainy season, these holes are filled with water. Mosquitoes breed in these holes and create the danger of Malaria.
There are heaps of rubbish lying everywhere. The municipality sweeper does not come regularly. The drains are not cleaned regularly.
Please instruct the sanitary staff to see that the roads and streets are swept daily and the drains are cleaned regularly.

Ans. The hailstones destroyed Lencho's crops completely. He was very sad. He had only one hope to get help from God. So he wrote a letter to God.

(a) Describe how the young seagull made his maiden flight.
Ans. The seagull was very hungry. When he saw his mother bringing food in her beak, he dived towards her. But he fell from the brink of the ledge. He screamed with fear. But his fear lasted only for a moment. The next moment, he felt that his wings spread outwords. He was flying. The seagull was very happy as he had learnt how to fly. He kept flying for sometime. His parents, brothers and sister flew around him. Then they landed on the sea surface. The seagull also came down. When he tried to land, his legs sank into the sea. He cried with fear again. But then his belly touch the water. He did not drown. He started floating on the surface of the sea. Thus the seagull made the first flight of his life.

(b) Write a character sketch of the thief boy in Ruskin Bond's "The Thief's Story"
Ans. Hari Singh is a thief. His real name is not Hari Singh, he keeps on changing his names to escape from police. He is only 15 years old. He earns the trust of people, then robs them and flees. When he sees Anil, he thinks of robbing him and asks for any work. Anil, being a simple person lets him work and even starts teaching him how to cook. Hari Singh steals a little money daily when he goes to buy the daily groceries and one day when he gets a chance he steals money and runs away. But at the station he has a change of heart and comes back. Anil gave him 50 rupee note in the morning. Hari is now happy and contented to live with Anil.

(a) What is the central idea of the poem 'Fire and Ice'?
Ans.The main idea of the poem Fire and ice is that the world will end one day. There is greed and hate among human beings. The poet thinks that this greed and hatred will destroy the world one day.

(b) How does the poet contrast the tiger in the cage with the tiger in the forest?
Ans. The cage tiger has only a few steps to walk around in his cage. He is very angry in cell. He also ignores the visitors. But the forest tiger hides himself behind the trees. He slides through the long grass. He hunts the plump deer near the water hole. He also terrifies the villagers by baring his long teeth and claws.

(a) What evidence do you get from the text about Tricki's affluent living (समृद्ध जीवन) ?
Ans. When Tricki was sent to Veterinary Hospital, the entire staff of Mrs Pumphrey's house rush to bring his day bed, his night bed, favourite cushions, toys and rubber rings, breakfast bowl, lunch bowl, supper bowl. It all shows that Tricki has an affluent living.

(b) Describe Horace Danby's encounter with the young lady.
Ans. Danby thought that he was going to have all the jewels to himself. But as he met the young woman, he got terrified. Danby's encounter with the young woman was rather an unfortunate one for him.
