About the year 1900, a small, dark-haired boy named Charles Chaplin was often seen waiting outside the back entrances of London theatres. He looked thin and hungry but his blue eyes were determined. He was hoping to get work in show business. He could sing and dance. His parents were music-hall performers and he had been bom into the life of the theatre. And, although his own boyhood was painfully hard, he knew how to make people laugh.

His own father had died from drinking too much. And his mother was not really able to look after Charles and his older half-brother, Sid. She was often sick in mind and had to be sent to hospital

This summer vacation you went for a meditation camp in the hills of Dharamshala. Write a paragraph describing your experience of a meditation camp. (5X1-5)

Ans.

it was the time of our vacation. Due to hot weather, education department declared holidays for students. But in the vacation period department organised a meditation camp at Dharamshala. I joined this programme with two teachers and 10 students of my school. It was really New experience of life for me. There weather was totally  difference  from here. It was looking as I am in heaven.  The breeze was very cool and fresh. Really it is a good place for meditation camp. There I felt fresh and healthy every day. I enjoyed there every moment. It was a great experience for me.

Question: 4 Read the following passage/stanza and answer the following questions objectively. (5X1-5)

Margie had hoped he wouldn't know how to put it together again, but he knew how all right, and, after an hour or so, there it was again, large and black and ugly, with a big screen on which all lessons were shown and the questions were asked. That wasn't so bad. The part Margie hated most was the slot where she had to put homework and test papers. She always had to write them out in a punch code they made her learn when she was six years old, and the mechanical teacher calculated the marks in no time.

In what ways did Kezia's grandmother encourage her to get to know her father better?

Kezia's efforts to please her father resulted in displeasing him very much. How did this happen?

Ans.The main theme of the story is the relationship between parents and their children. The children share a very deep bond of love with their parents. Young children do not feel that their parents love and care for them because they are strict to them. They don’t like their actions. But when children grow up they realize that all the acts of their parents were favourable for them. The bond of love between parents and their children has been underlined through this story. Kezia, who afraid from his father in the beginning for his strictness, later understand how his father treats him with love and affection.

 

6. When Evelyn's deafness was first notices? When was it confirmed?

Ans. Her deafness was first noticed when she was eight years old and it was confirmed when she was eleven.

Describe how Toto took a bath during winter evenings.

Ans. Toto takes bathe in a tub' of warm water. It puts its legs in the water one by one and applies soap as well. Toto has learnt proper steps of bathing while watching the narrator.

7. Write a brief note on the origin of the shehnai.

Ans. Shehnai is an improved version of pungi as it has a better tonal quality than pungi. It is a natural hollow stem pipe with seven holes on its body. It is longer and broader than  pungi.

    It was modified and made by a barber. Since it was played for the first time in Shah's chamber by a Nai, it came to be known as a Shehnai. Its sound was so appreciated by the emperor that it was made a part of naubat. 

     The shehnai was traditionally played in royal courts, temples and weddings. Ustaad Bismillah Khan brought this instrument onto the classical stage.

Or

Give in brief the central idea of the poem, 'Wind'.

Ans. The central idea of the poem Wind is that problems are part of life. Those who face them boldly succeed in life. And those who are weak and don't have courage, fail in life. So we should always be ready to face problems.

8. Why does the lost child lose interest in the things he had wanted earlier?

Or

What do you think happens in the end? Does the child find his parents?

Ans. On his way to the fair the child sees many things as toys, balloons, garland of gulmohur,  swing and snake-charmer. He gets attracted towards all these things. So, he lags behind. He wants toys, sweets especially burfi, balloons.  He has a keen desire to enjoy the roundabout. He moves on without waiting for an answer because whenever he stops to see things, his parents gave him a cautionary call, “come, child, come!” He knows that his parents will not purchase all these things for him.
