Q. What is the ‘childish longing’ that the poet refers to? Why is it ‘vain’?

Ans. The poet refers to the farmers' longing for customers at their roadside stall. This is because no one stopped to buy anything. They stop only for asking direction or for gas. Hence, this child-longing is 'vain'.

 

Q. Where was the roadside stand put up and what for?

Ans. They wait all day for the cars to stop and buy something and give them money. They wanted to earn money from them. That is why; they had put up the roadside stand in the countryside.

 

Q. What is the man at the stall waiting for all the day?

Ans. The people of the roadside stand sat in prayer that some city traffic should stop by and buy their wares so that they could make some money to improve their life.

Ans. Mr. Lamb is an old man. He owns a big garden and a house. He keeps the gate of his garden always open. Derry comes there by scaling garden wall.

Ans. One side of Derry’s face was burnt. Now he looks ugly. People keep away from him. That is why he says that people were afraid of him.

Ans. It was not a fire that had burnt his face. He got acid all down that side of his face. It burnt the face all the way. It ate up his face.

Ans. It conveys the idea that it doesn’t matter what you look like. It is what you are inside. Handsome is that handsome does.

Ans. Mr. Lamb puts a ladder against the branch of an apple tree. He tries to pluck apples. When he pulls a branch, his ladder falls back. He falls with the ladder and dies.

Ans. Evans was a young and clever prisoner. He had escaped thrice from the prison for which he was known 'Evans the Break'. He had never involved himself in violence. 

 

Q. Why was Evans called ‘Evans the Break’?

Ans. Evans was called 'Evans the break' by the prison officers because he had escaped from prison three times. He was imprisoned in the Oxford Prison.

 

Q. What seating arrangements were made in Evans’ cell for the examination?

Ans. The Board accepted the unusual request of conducting the examination of Evans in his cell. All necessary documents were to be sent to the prison. And two square tables were placed opposite to each other in the cell.

 

Q. What were the precautions taken for the smooth conduct of the examination?

Ans. On the day of exam, the prison staff was put on high alert and special care was taken to conduct the exam. All doors and gates were closed. Stephens and Jackson were appointed to keep an eye on the exam proceedings. All sharp instruments like razor and nail -scissors were removed from the cell.

 

Q. How is Evans able to escape the fourth time?

Ans. Evans escapes from the Oxford jail in disguise of McLeery whom Evans has made injured. He misled the officers of the prison by miss guiding them catching him. He pretended to be gorged and while the ambulance was called the cleverly flew from the car.

Write in brief the theme/central idea of the poem 'A Roadside Stand'.

Ans. In this poem, Robert Frost comments on rich people who don’t show any sympathy towards poor people. The poet tells that poor villager setup a stand near the road to sells the things to earn some money.  People passed from there but they don’t buy any things. They only complained for artless painting. Some cars came there only to ask the things not to buy anything.  


Write a brief summary of the play ‘On the Face of It’.

Ans. The three characters in the play are Mr. Lamb, Derry and Derry’s mother. Mr. Lamb is an old man. He has lost one of his legs in war. Now he has a tin leg in its place. He lives alone in a house that has a garden also. People have spread many stories about him and no one ever comes to visit him. Derry’s state is also not much different. He is a fourteen years old boy. The one side of his face is all burned and he looks very ugly. People look at him with a sense of shock and fear. Everyone makes him conscious of his ugliness and it gives him much mental pain. One day he comes into Mr. Lamb’s garden, thinking that no one lives there. Mr. Lamb sees him enter the garden and the two have a long heart to heart talk. Derry is so impressed by Mr. Lamb’s encouraging words that he decides to leave his home and start living with Mr. Lamb. He goes back home to tell his mother of what he has decided. But when he comes to the garden, he finds Mr. Lamb has already dead. 

 

Write a brief summary of the story ‘Evans Tries an O-Level’.

Ans. In this play Evans is a clever prisoner. He has escaped from the jail three times before this. He was known as ‘Evans the break’ by prison officers. He expresses his desire to get O-Level certificate in German language. His desire was granted after the approval of Board secretary. A tutor came to teach him German in his cell for one year. After it the day of examination came. On that day all arrangements were done to conduct exam. A person named McLeery came to take exam as invigilator. In reality he was Evans’ friend and it was the part of his plan. After the exam, Stephen went to leave invigilator at the gate and when he came back to the cell. He found Mcleery injured, but he was Evans himself. By this he escaped from the prison fourth time.
