*1. Describe Professor Gaitonde’s experience in the Azad Maidan.*
Ans. When it was the time to close library. He came out and found a hotel to stay; for the night. After the meal, he went towards the Azad Maidan for a stroll. There he found a Pandal. A lecturer was in progress. He found that on the stage there was a table and an occupied chair. He thought that the presidential chair should not be vacant. So he went to occupy the chair. The audience shouted at him to vacate the chair. He tried to tell them that the chair should be occupied. But they were not in a mood to listen to him. The people in the Pandal started throwing tomatoes, eggs and other things at him. In the end, they lift him and threw him out of the pandal.
*2. How do we know that Professor Gaitonde's mind is in the past?*
Ans. When the story starts, professor Gaitonde's is already in the past. He is travelling in a train from Pune to Bombay. He is going to Bombay to visit a library in a connection with the lecture that he has to give. The train stops at a small station called Sarhad. He sees an Anglo-Indian checking the tickets. A fellow passenger on the train tells him that now the British Raj area has begun. Professor Gaitonde wondered that this India was different from the India he has known. He did not know that the British were still in India. When the train reaches Bombay, he gets down at Victoria Terminus. The station is very neat and clean. There are a few British officers on the platform. Outside the station, he sees the East India House building. He is surprised to find that building.
